The Columbia River Gorge is a natural wind tunnel, creating great windsurfing and kite boarding conditions. In the early 1980s, “board heads” discovered the high and steady wind that blew in the Gorge. From Rooster Rock on the west end past Arlington to the east, windsurfers and kite boarders dance on the river amongst the basalt cliffs, waterfalls, and lush fir forests. To catch some of the windsurfing aerial experts, visit Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery on a windy day and bring your camera. You will also see sailboats on the river all summer, racing across the water or enjoying an evening sail.
Whether you windsurf, kite board or sail, the Columbia River offers excellent wind conditions for all skill levels.
